There comes a point in many people’s lives when we realize the work we are doing is not fulfilling us. We begin to feel trapped, constrained, bitter, bored, overworked and under appreciated. We hate our jobs or the career we’re in.
This could be for several reasons: we’ve out-grown the position and are no longer feeling like we are growing, or we truly are working for a company/boss that is draining which then causes us to no longer like what we’re doing, or a combination of the two.
No matter the case, this is an opportunity. I truly believe every step is a step forward even if it doesn’t seem like it. If you are feeling like it’s time to move on, try something new, or expand your horizons (that’s the expression, right???), I’m glad you’re here.
I know so many times there are fears and thoughts that come up which will cause us to stay in a job waaaayyyyy longer than we should. Thoughts such as, “what if I can’t find a company/job that pays as much?” or “what if no one is hiring in my field?” or “I don’t even know what I want to do!?”, could definitely hold us back from even trying to change.
Here is the analogy I’m going to use: You’re a delicious, juicy lemon being squeezed, are you going to let your juices go everywhere and be wasted or are you going to be deliberate so you can make lemonade? (I know, a little corny, but it was the first thing that came to mind and made sense, lol.)
A very practical place to start is by doing career assessments and personality/ strength finder assessments and quizzes. There are several online that you can do for free. These will guide you in finding a good career for you. Here is a great post I found with a list of several different career quizzes and assessments listed so you can choose the right one for you: The Best Career Tests and Quizzes to Help You Find Your Dream Job.
If you’ve read any of my previous blog posts you know I’m into self-discovery and going deep. If you’re looking for a career or job change because what you’re doing is no longer fulfilling you and you’re ready to start doing work you love then it’s time for the deep stuff…
If it’s time for a career change so that you can do the work you love and get paid, the first thing to consider is: Are you going to work for a company or is it time to do your own thing (start your own business)?
Considering “it’s time to do your own thing” doesn’t necessarily mean you are ready to start your own business RIGHT NOW, but it means that having your own business is your end goal.
If you’re not sure, a great place to start is by asking these questions: What would you do if money were not an issue? How would you be of service to the rest of the world? Really take a moment to feel into these questions and imagine an ideal work day/ week. What do you want your dream life to look like?
I’ve written about these things before so I’m not going to go into too much more detail, but I do ask this of you- really take time to think about, pray about, and meditate on what YOU REALLY WANT. It’s not about what makes the most money or what is easiest, it’s about doing work that is exciting to do. It’s about doing work that leaves you feeling fulfilled and satisficed. It’s about when you come to the end of your life, knowing that you did what you came here to do.
